The Sacred Cod: A Symbol of Massachusetts’ Maritime Heritage
Along the coast of Massachusetts, the sea has long shaped the communities, traditions, and history of the region. Few symbols capture this connection quite like the Sacred Cod, a wooden carving that has watched over the Massachusetts legislature for more than two centuries. Its legacy continues to inspire the name and spirit of Sacred Cod Tavern at Chatham Bars Inn.
A Symbol of Massachusetts
The Sacred Cod is a wooden carving of an Atlantic codfish measuring four feet, eleven inches long. Today, it hangs in the House Chamber of the Massachusetts State House in Boston, representing the importance of the fishing industry to the Commonwealth.
For generations, fishing has played an essential role in the lives and livelihoods of Massachusetts’ coastal communities. The Sacred Cod serves as a lasting reminder of this maritime heritage and the industry that helped shape New England.
Three Carvings, Centuries of History
The story of the Sacred Cod began in the eighteenth century, when an earlier carving hung in what is now Boston’s Old State House. That carving was destroyed in a fire in 1747.
A replacement was installed when the building was rebuilt in 1776, but it disappeared during the British occupation of Boston during the American Revolution.
In 1784, Boston merchant John Rowe presented a new wooden codfish carving to the Massachusetts legislature. This third carving is the Sacred Cod we know today.
When the new Massachusetts State House opened in 1798, the carving moved with the legislature to Beacon Hill. It has remained there ever since, hanging above the House Chamber as a symbol of the state’s enduring connection to the sea.
A Fish with a Story
The Sacred Cod has even been at the center of a little mischief. In 1933, Harvard University students famously removed the carving in a prank known as the “codnapping.” It was returned two days later, adding another memorable chapter to its history.
Today, the Sacred Cod continues to watch over the Massachusetts House of Representatives, preserving a tradition that has endured for generations.
