CAPE & ISLANDS ATTRACTIONS
A Vacation on Cape Cod
Offers Something for Every
Traveler
Cape Cod and the nearby
islands of
Martha’s Vineyard and
Nantucket are some of
the most magical places in
the world. With miles of
ocean beaches, sandy dunes
and quaint town centers
these unspoiled places have
escaped overdevelopment and
serve as reminders of the
way life used to be.
Located on the elbow of Cape
Cod, the town of
Chatham features a
quaint and walkable Main
Street with numerous family
owned and operated shops,
restaurants and businesses.
Chatham has a rich seafaring
history, a railroad museum,
and summer concerts held in
a gazebo on Main Street. A
few local sites not to be
missed include:
The Fish Pier
In the 1800’s, fishing was
the chief Cape Cod
occupation of the villagers
of Chatham and is still of
importance today. Visit the
fish pier around 3 or 4 p.m.
and see the local fishermen
bring in their daily catch.
The Chatham Lighthouse
The lighthouse was built in
1877 and still stands,
safely guiding vessels
across the water. This
historic lighthouse also
marks the point from which
you can gain the most
amazing views of the
Atlantic and see "the break"
which was created after
severe winter storms.
Monomoy National Wildlife
Refuge
The refuge consists of 2,750
acres, 40 of which are on
Morris Island and are
accessible by car, offering
an interesting trail
approximately 3/4 mile long.
The remaining acres can only
be reached by guided boat
trips to the island. Hike
the nature trails. Observe,
photograph, and study
wildlife and plants. Beach
combing, shellfishing, and
surf fishing are popular
activities as well. The
refuge has long been a
favorite haunt of
birdwatchers. With nearly
300 different species of
birds noted ornithologists
consider Monomoy to be one
of the most exciting birding
locations on the East coast. |
